The 20 newly discovered moons of Saturn are tiny, barely 5 kilometers in diameter each.
CAPE CANAVERAL. – The solar system has a new champion when it comes to the moons.
Twenty new moons were discovered around Saturn, which gives the planet a total of 82, scientists said Monday. That exceeds 79 that Jupiter has.
If it’s any consolation for Jupiter fans, the largest planet in our system still has the largest moon: Ganymede, almost half the size of the Earth.
In contrast, Saturn’s 20 newly discovered moons are tiny, barely 5 kilometers (3 miles) in diameter each.
Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science, who led the team that made the discovery, said another 100 even more tiny moons could be orbiting Saturn waiting to be discovered.
Sheppard and his team used a telescope in Hawaii to detect the new moons in the middle of the year.
